Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’

US President Donald Trump expressed that the trade agreement between America and the United Kingdom is “something that can always be revised.” During an interview with Sky News on Wednesday, he stated, “We provided them with a favorable trade arrangement, superior to what I was compelled to accept,” when reflecting on the state of the transatlantic partnership.

Criticism of UK Leadership

Trump, who has consistently criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his decision not to back the US-Israel conflict against Iran in February, suggested the bilateral ties had “improved.” However, he emphasized that this would not diminish the significance of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming state visit to the United States.

“With who?”

When pressed to define the nature of the special relationship, Trump responded with a question. After the reporter clarified he was referring to the UK, he continued: “It’s the connection where when we requested assistance, they weren’t present. When we required support, they weren’t there. When we didn’t need them, they still weren’t there.”

“And they still aren’t there.”

Further questioning revealed Trump’s sentiment: “It has been better, but it’s unfortunate.” He reiterated his belief that the trade deal was “good” and “better than I had to,” adding that it “can always be changed.”

Historical Context of the Agreement

In May of the previous year, the UK became the first nation to finalize a tariff deal with Trump following his re-election. This agreement reduced import duties on vehicles, aluminium, and steel. However, recent weeks have seen tensions between the leaders over Middle Eastern policies, with Trump frequently accusing Starmer of a weak stance.

“No Winston Churchill.”

Despite his criticism, Trump praised the King, stating he “has known him for a long time” and described him as “wonderful.” He also noted that the King is “not involved in that process” regarding the strained diplomatic ties. When asked about his anticipation for the royal visit in late April, he replied: “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.”
