Olivier Awards 2026: Highlights from the Night of Theatrical Recognition
The 2026 Olivier Awards, held on Sunday night, featured a mix of nostalgia, personal triumphs, and surprising revelations. Among the standout moments, Paddington The Musical emerged as a major winner, claiming seven honors, including the coveted Best New Musical category.
Rachel Zegler’s Emotional Victory
Rachel Zegler’s emotional acceptance of the Best Actress in a Musical award for *Evita* sparked a heartfelt reflection. As she entered the winner’s room, she spotted Elaine Page, the original Eva Perón from the 1978 debut of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical. Zegler expressed admiration, stating,
“I spent my life listening to her sing ‘Memory’ from *Cats*.”
She also shared her surprise at the number of well-known figures in the audience, calling the evening “a bit like a dream.”
From Social Media to the Spotlight
Zegler recounted her journey into musical theatre, highlighting her role as Maria in the 2021 film adaptation of *West Side Story*. She explained,
“I was just very lucky that my parents let me. I kind of did it without asking them, but they were very supportive.”
Her win, she said, felt “crazy” given the competition, as she was one of 30,000 women who auditioned for the part.
Brian Cranston’s Theatrical Marathon
Brian Cranston, known for his role in *Breaking Bad*, faced a demanding schedule as the lead in the West End revival of *All My Sons*. Performing two shows daily on Wednesdays and Saturdays, he said,
“We did 115 performances, we did a lot.”
To manage his energy, Cranston described his routine: “I say my little prayer, go to bed, take a nap, get up and get ready for the next show—
that’s my life.”
Rosamund Pike’s Return to the Stage
Rosamund Pike marked her triumphant return to West End theatre after 14 years, earning the Best Actress award for her role in *Inter Alia*. She told the BBC,
“I’ve been waiting for something like this, the thrill of doing a new play is incredible.”
Pike also revealed her passion for F1, noting that her podcast on the sport reflects her love for “the stories and the global movement of teams, which are not unlike a theatrical family.”
The Magic Behind Paddington’s Success
Tom Fletcher, the composer of *Paddington The Musical*, credited his family for the project’s success. “My wife, Giovanna, and sister, Carrie, are both West End performers, and they were instrumental in the writing process,” he said. Fletcher joked about the family album of the show, mentioning,
“It’s my son, my wife and my sister—
I just called in all the favours.”
A Night of Naps and Nostalgia
For those in the industry, two shows a day are routine, but Cranston’s experience with *All My Sons* was unique. He humorously described his daily ritual: “When there are two shows a day, I can’t expend any more energy so I stay inside the theatre, eat a little soup—
I’m like a monk.”
