Dogs ‘doing really well’ after 250 found crammed in living room, RSPCA says

Following the rescue of over 250 poodle-cross dogs from an overcrowded property earlier this year, the RSPCA has shared updates indicating the animals are in good health. An image captured by a rescuer, which circulated widely online, depicted the dogs tightly packed in a single living room. The charity initially described the situation as a result of “extenuating family circumstances” that led to rapid escalation in numbers and living conditions.

Rescue and Rehoming Efforts

Lee Hopgood, the RSPCA’s operational superintendent for the North of England, noted that “surprisingly… the dogs are fine and doing really, really well.” Despite their cramped conditions, many had matted and crusted coats requiring veterinary attention. Of the rescued animals, 87 were taken in by the RSPCA, while the rest were entrusted to Dogs Trust for care.

“He’d never been on a lead before, so when you put a lead on he locked his claws to the floor, he didn’t know what that was.” – Dermot Murphy, former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner

One notable case is Boone, a poodle-cross dog adopted by Murphy. When Boone first entered RSPCA care, he was underweight and had sore ears and eyes. Murphy explained that Boone had to be carried in and out of the car during his initial adjustment to the new home. Now, Boone can confidently run off-leash and play with a ball, a testament to his progress.

Settling into life outside the cramped living room has been a challenge for Boone, who needed gradual exposure to new experiences. “It’s just fantastic to see how he’s come out of himself and become part of our family,” Murphy added.

Owner Circumstances and RSPCA’s Response

The RSPCA linked the overcrowding to factors such as mental health issues, the cost of living crisis, or poor breeding practices. In this case, the charity chose not to pursue legal action, citing the owners’ “extremely vulnerable nature.” The charity also clarified that the “shocking” image of the dogs was not AI-generated, addressing concerns that it might have been digitally altered.

The photo highlights the “staggering reality” of multi-animal incidents, which have risen by 70% in England and Wales since 2021. Poodle-cross dogs, or “doodles,” are among the most popular crossbreeds, according to a 2025 Dogs Trust survey. They ranked in the top three for ownership frequency.

In November, the RSPCA reported rescuing 80 dogs, including chihuahuas, pomeranians, and cross-breeds, from a home in Bedfordshire. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by animal welfare organizations in addressing overcrowding and ensuring proper care for rescued pets.
