Meghan Markle Labels Herself as ‘Most Trolled Individual Globally’

During a recent visit to Melbourne, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, described herself as the “most trolled person in the entire world” over the past decade. She and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, addressed the impact of social media during a conversation with attendees, emphasizing the relentless daily bullying they endured. The couple, currently in Australia as non-working royals, used their time to highlight concerns about tech companies’ lack of motivation to curb online cruelty, which they argue drives engagement through relentless negativity.

Advocacy for Children’s Social Media Restriction

On the same day, the pair participated in a meeting with representatives of a mental health initiative to endorse Australia’s under-16 social media ban. The discussion coincided with Prince Harry’s keynote address at a workplace culture summit, where tickets cost up to A$2,400 (£1,260) each. Speaking at Swinburne University of Technology, Harry praised the ban as “epic” for its “responsibility and leadership standpoint,” while noting that it should have been implemented earlier.

“When I think of all of you and what you’re experiencing, I think so much of that is having to realise that you know that industry, that billion-dollar industry, that is completely anchored and predicated on cruelty to get clicks – that’s not going to change,” Meghan said.

Harry echoed Meghan’s critique, stressing that tech companies must take accountability. He argued that young users shouldn’t be penalized by bans when the platforms are meant to be safe. “So many countries have now followed suit,” he remarked, “but it should have never, ever got to a ban.”

Personal Reflections on Loss and Grief

At the InterEdge Summit, Harry shared insights into his emotional journey, including the death of his mother, Princess Diana. “In my experience, loss is disorienting at any age,” he told the audience. “Grief does not disappear because we ignore it.” He highlighted the challenges of navigating such emotions during childhood, under public scrutiny. “Experiencing that as a kid while in a goldfish bowl under constant surveillance, yes, that will have its challenges. And without purpose, it can break you,” he added.

Harry also revealed feeling “lost, betrayed, or completely powerless” during various stages of his life. Notably, he did not receive payment for his speech, according to PA news agency reports.

Connecting with Indigenous Culture

On the third day of their tour, the couple joined an Aboriginal walking tour known as the Scar Tree Walk. This event, led by local Indigenous guides, explored the Birrarung, the traditional name for Melbourne’s Yarra River. They learned about the river’s historical use for fishing and hunting by Aboriginal communities, with Tom Mosby, CEO of the Koorie Heritage Trust, explaining that it offers a glimpse into the city’s deeper cultural roots.

Some residents and visitors encountered the couple during the walk. Sofia Rocha, a Brazilian visitor, shared her surprise at spotting them during a run, calling them “the most gorgeous couple.” Narelle Zagami, a local, expressed emotional support, stating, “They are just beautiful people.” When questioned about their earnings from the trip, Zagami replied, “They’ve got to make a living as well. It’s part of their life now, this sort of thing, so I think it’s good.”

A Return to Australia After Five Years

Meghan and Harry’s previous visit to Australia occurred in 2018, shortly after their marriage. During that nine-day trip, large crowds gathered for their public appearances. Their current tour marks another chapter in their engagement with the nation, blending advocacy, cultural immersion, and personal reflection.
