Former NATO Leader Alarms Over UK’s National Security

A senior government advisor is set to criticize the UK’s political leadership for a lack of urgency in defense matters, labeling their approach as “corrosive complacency.” Lord George Robertson, the former NATO secretary general and author of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), will deliver a speech on Tuesday, accusing Treasury officials without military expertise of undermining national security through “vandalism.”

Delays in Defence Spending Plan

Despite the government’s pledge to unveil a 10-year defence investment plan to support the SDR’s goals, the initiative has faced repeated postponements. A spokesperson emphasized that the review is “supported by the highest increase in defence funding since the Cold War,” totaling over £270 billion across the current parliamentary term.

“We cannot defend Britain with an ever-expanding welfare budget,” Robertson will argue in his address. “The country is underprepared, underinsured, and facing immediate threats, yet a national dialogue on defence remains elusive.”

Global Pressures on Defence Commitments

Amidst tensions from Russia’s Ukraine invasion and the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO members including the UK are urged to enhance military spending. Robertson’s remarks come as the government aims to meet a target of allocating 3% of GDP to defence by the next parliamentary session.

Military Readiness and Recent Concerns

Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton recently told the BBC that the Middle East conflict, which erupted on 28 February, represents “one of the most dangerous periods in three decades.” While some questioned the UK’s preparedness, Knighton defended the nation’s response, citing the deployment of a Royal Navy vessel to Cyprus to safeguard the RAF Akrotiri base from drone attacks.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had previously stated the investment plan was “finalised” and on his desk, though Robertson’s speech suggests lingering doubts about its effectiveness. The SDR’s vision faces challenges as delays raise questions about the government’s commitment to long-term security goals.
