Coachella kicks off with Sabrina Carpenter and surprise guests
On Friday, the Coachella music festival launched its 2024 edition with an unexpected twist: veteran actress Susan Sarandon joined pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set, portraying an older version of the 26-year-old performer. The surprise appearance unfolded as part of a Hollywood-themed performance, blending music and film in a unique way. Other notable figures in the gig included comedian Will Ferrell and actor Sam Elliott, who added to the cinematic atmosphere.
Weather disruptions affect schedule
Strong winds disrupted the event’s flow, leading to the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set after Carpenter’s performance. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival announced the decision via Instagram, stating,
“Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight. Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”
Weather forecasts indicated gusts up to 25 mph on Friday, prompting an air quality advisory for the region. The National Weather Service warned,
“Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections.”
While conditions were concerning, local authorities noted particle levels remained within “good to moderate” ranges after Thursday noon.
Lineup highlights and future plans
Friday’s lineup featured KATSEYE, the global girl group, and British artist Disclosure, alongside Carpenter’s theatrical opener. The singer transformed the stage into a Hollywood Hills-inspired set, dubbed “Sabrinawood,” where she emerged after a short film portraying a late-night traffic stop with Sam Elliott. Will Ferrell later joined the stage as a fictional electrician, adding comedic flair. Saturday will see Justin Bieber take the main stage, with Karol G headlining on Sunday. UK artists like Wet Leg, Lambrini Girls, Little Simz, and FKA Twigs are also set to perform. The festival’s schedule will repeat next weekend, continuing its tradition at the Empire Polo Club in Indio since 2002.
