Chalamet thanked by Royal Ballet and Opera boss for boosting ticket sales

Alex Beard, the director of the Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO), expressed gratitude toward Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet for unexpectedly increasing the institution’s ticket sales. Beard’s remarks followed Chalamet’s controversial comments about ballet and opera, which sparked a mix of criticism and curiosity in the performing arts world.

“We received a fantastic public reaction from his statement,” Beard said in an interview with The Times. “I thought it important that we didn’t respond in a stuffy way. Instead, we simply said, ‘Take a look at what we’re doing, mate’—for example, highlighting that our youngest audience is aged 20 to 30.”

Chalamet’s remarks, made during a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas in February, appeared to downplay the relevance of ballet and opera. “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore,’” he stated. However, he swiftly added, “All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there,” acknowledging the potential misinterpretation of his words.

Seattle Opera’s Marketing Strategy

The Seattle Opera seized the opportunity to leverage Chalamet’s comments, launching a targeted promotion for a Carmen performance. On Instagram, the company invited buyers to apply the promo code “TIMOTHEE” for discounted tickets. “Timmy, you’re welcome to use it too,” the opera house noted, blending humor with the campaign.

During his launch interview at Covent Garden, Beard also addressed the RBO’s recent pricing adjustments. “Our pricing model isn’t full-on dynamic pricing,” he clarified. “Prices remain fixed during the priority-booking phase and the initial public booking weeks. Lower-tier tickets stay at consistent rates, and there’s a limit on how high top-tier prices can go.”

Beard emphasized that “tweaking the top price” could help maintain affordability for the broader audience. The comments reflected a strategic balance between modernizing ticket pricing and preserving accessibility, a challenge the RBO continues to navigate in an evolving cultural landscape.
