Artemis II crew: ‘We left as friends – we came back as best friends’

The Artemis II crew shared how their journey instilled a renewed sense of hope and unity across the globe, despite the world’s current divisions. During their first NASA press event following their return last Friday, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen spoke of their bond deepening during the mission. They described the experience as something that transcends words, linking their shared time in space to a universal human connection.

Humanity’s shared purpose

While acknowledging the technical feats, the astronauts emphasized the emotional significance of their mission. They noted that the journey reinforced the essence of being human: laughter, joy, tears, and a deep instinct for solidarity. “The mission wasn’t just about reaching the Moon—it was about uniting people,” Wiseman said, reflecting on the global reaction to their achievement.

“We were certainly hooked on this mission, but when we came home, we were shocked at the global outpouring of support, pride, and ownership of this mission… we want to thank the world. Thank you for tuning in.” – Reid Wiseman

Firsts and shared milestones

The crew marked historic firsts, with Glover becoming the first Black astronaut to venture into deep space, Koch the first woman to reach such distances, and Hansen the first Canadian to do so. The Orion spacecraft, named Integrity, was highlighted as a symbol of international collaboration. “Thank you to every person who contributed to building that machine,” Wiseman said, calling it “a magnificent creation.”

Emotional reflections from the Moon

Christina Koch described how the mission’s impact became clear through others’ perspectives. Her husband’s words on a video call—stating that the crew had bridged divides and inspired unity—left her deeply moved. “When he looked me in the eye and said, ‘No, really, you’ve made a difference,’ it brought tears to my eyes,” she shared, expressing that it was “all we ever wanted.”

“I don’t think humanity has evolved to the point of being able to comprehend what we’re looking at right now, because it was otherworldly.” – Reid Wiseman

Victor Glover spoke of the mission as a collective human endeavor, not just a crew effort. “How much we want to reflect back to you all how we did this, not we as a crew, but we as countries and as humans,” he said. The visual spectacle of space left Hansen awestruck, describing the galaxy’s vastness as something he had never fully grasped before. “We just saw so many amazing things,” he added, “and I kept seeing this depth to the galaxy that I had never experienced.”

Challenges and moments of wonder

The crew faced minor hurdles, including a persistent blockage in the toilet’s primary vent line. Yet, the Orion capsule impressed them deeply. Wiseman noted the spacecraft’s performance as a testament to engineering and teamwork, remarking on how close they came to the lunar surface during the mission. “That moment will resonate in every NASA planning room,” he said, underscoring the significance of their achievement.

Even the smallest details became memorable. Koch recounted how her Earthly habits had been altered by weightlessness, humorously describing a moment when she tossed a shirt into the air only to be surprised when it fell. “It actually surprised me,” she laughed, capturing the unexpected joy of returning to gravity.

As the press conference continued, the room buzzed with laughter and shared stories. The astronauts’ words carried a message of optimism, framing their mission as a step toward a more united future. Their journey, though brief, reminded all who listened of the power of human connection and the boundless potential of exploration.
