Denmark’s Prime Minister Warns Trump Administration Over Greenland Claims

Amid growing concerns that Greenland, the vast Arctic territory under Danish rule, remains a target for the Trump administration, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has issued a pointed warning to the White House. In nationally televised remarks, she emphasized that Greenland has consistently stated its desire to remain independent from the United States.

“I think you have to take the US president seriously when he says he wants Greenland,” Frederiksen stated, highlighting the urgency of Trump’s ambitions. She further warned that a military attack on Greenland by the US could jeopardize NATO unity and the security framework established since World War II.

Frederiksen’s comments come as Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic importance. The president claimed that the territory is increasingly vulnerable to Russian and Chinese influence, stating, “We need Greenland … It’s so strategic right now. Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place.”

NATO allies have voiced shared apprehension about the potential fallout of US actions in Greenland. A joint statement from leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Denmark underscored the importance of collective security in the Arctic. “Arctic security remains a key priority for Europe and it is critical for international and transatlantic security,” the statement asserted. They reaffirmed their commitment to upholding principles such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, and border inviolability under the UN Charter.

Trump reiterated his stance on Sunday, insisting that Greenland is vital for national security. His remarks were echoed by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who claimed that military force would not be necessary to secure Greenland. “Nobody’s gonna fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland,” Miller said on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper.” However, when questioned about the possibility of military intervention, Miller challenged Denmark’s claim over the Arctic territory.

Miller’s comments followed his wife, Katie Miller, who posted an image of Greenland overlaid with the Americas on X, subtly hinting at the US’s interest in the region. The exchange has reignited debates about Denmark’s sovereignty and the broader implications of Trump’s geopolitical strategies.
