Artemis II Crew Sets New Space Record

The Artemis II astronauts, aboard the Orion spacecraft, have shattered a distance record from Earth. During their nine-day voyage, they traveled further than any humans in history, reaching 248,655 miles (400,171km) — surpassing the Apollo 13 achievement. The crew, currently on their third day orbiting the Moon’s far side, shared messages with loved ones via video link. Commander Reid Wiseman’s wife passed away from cancer in 2020 at age 46.

Once communication was restored, astronaut Christina Koch remarked: “It is so great to hear from Earth again.”

Canadian Prime Minister Joins International Mission

During his inaugural bilateral visit, the Canadian prime minister joined the Ottawa Charge team on the ice with the Finnish president. This collaboration highlights global partnerships in space exploration. Meanwhile, Jeremy Hansen became the first Canadian astronaut to venture into deep space as part of Artemis II, receiving a call from the prime minister during the mission.

Rare View of Lunar Mission from Commercial Flight

Passengers on a commercial flight were treated to a rare sight: the launch of NASA’s first crewed Moon mission in five decades. The BBC’s Science Editor Rebecca Morelle observed the event from just three miles away as the most powerful rocket ever built ignited in Florida. After overcoming delays and technical hurdles, the mission is now in Earth’s orbit, marking a significant step toward humanity’s return to the Moon by 2028.

Great Marshmallow Drop Event Draws Thousands

At the annual “Great Marshmallow Drop,” over 15,000 soft treats were released from a helicopter, sparking a race among children to collect them. The event, while unrelated to the mission, showcased community engagement with space exploration. The Artemis II crew, however, will not land on the Moon this time, though NASA is preparing for future lunar touchdowns.

Orion Tests Include Crew Practice Sessions

During their journey, the Artemis II astronauts conducted various experiments on the Orion spacecraft, including drills to refine their maneuvering skills. These tests ensured readiness for future missions. The crew’s experiences and updates were shared with families, offering a glimpse into life beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
