Ultra-Marathon Champion Passes Away During Cape Wrath Challenge

A 35-year-old elite runner from Dumfries, David Parrish, has tragically succumbed to injuries while completing the Cape Wrath trail in the Highlands. The event, spanning 234 miles (376km) from Fort William to Cape Wrath, was his latest endeavor to set a new record for the fastest solo finish. Parrish was discovered in the secluded mountainous expanse of Kintail, northwest of the Highlands, around 22:25 on Saturday. Police Scotland confirmed the death occurred under natural circumstances, with no evidence of foul play. His family was promptly informed of the incident.

Parrish, a former Royal Marine, had previously triumphed in the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023, despite racing professionally for just a handful of years. The trail, traversing rugged terrain across Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon, is celebrated as one of the United Kingdom’s most grueling routes. His current challenge was part of a fundraising effort for Scottish Mountain Rescue, honoring his late friend Luke Ireland. The 20-year-old Royal Marine from Monifeith perished in the Glen Clova mountains of Angus in November 2014.

A Legacy of Determination

Before joining the military, Parrish began running in his late teens, progressing to competitive races in his early 20s. He participated in local 5km and 10km events, eventually earning recognition as a club champion with Dumfries Running Club in 2022. The ex-Marine often described running as a way to unwind from the pressures of his duties. After leaving the service, he became a regular at Parkruns and completed the Cape Wrath Trail in 2021.

“David has always been such a joyful person and an inspirational ultra marathon athlete to spend time with,” said Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux, owners of No Limits Photography. “The world and the sport will be a far lesser place without him.”

Parrish’s fundraising campaign, launched in memory of Ireland, has amassed thousands of pounds. On his page, he expressed gratitude for the mountain rescue volunteers who worked tirelessly to locate his friend. Tributes from the community highlight his dedication to the sport and his commitment to supporting those who serve in challenging environments. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary journey for a runner who combined physical prowess with a heartfelt mission.
