UK Home Secretary Vows Legal Action Against Fraudulent Asylum Tactics

Shabana Mahmood, the UK’s Home Secretary, has vowed to take legal action against lawyers involved in manipulating the asylum process. This pledge follows a BBC investigation exposing how law firms and advisers charge migrants thousands of pounds to assist in fabricating claims of sexual orientation-based persecution. The Home Office is now examining these cases as part of a broader effort to address a rising pattern of deceptive applications.

Conservative officials argue the current system requires fundamental changes to ensure only those facing genuine threats are granted asylum. The BBC’s findings reveal that migrants with expiring visas are being coached to create false narratives, including forged documents such as letters, photos, and medical reports. These individuals then submit asylum requests, asserting they would face danger if sent back to Pakistan or Bangladesh.

The UK’s asylum framework provides refuge to people at risk of persecution due to their gender or sexual identity. However, the BBC’s report highlights how legal professionals are capitalizing on this by steering clients toward fabricated evidence. This group, which accounts for 35% of all asylum claims, now surpasses 100,000 applications annually, according to 2025 data.

“Anyone exploiting protections for those fleeing persecution over gender or sexual orientation is beyond contempt,” said Mahmood. “Fraudulent asylum seekers will face rejection, loss of support, and deportation if they attempt to deceive the British public.”

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has initiated urgent checks on law firms linked to the scandal. Jonathan Peddie, an SRA executive, stated that regulators will pursue legal action if evidence of misconduct is found.

Labour MP Jo White has urged the Home Office to restrict study visas for Pakistanis, mirroring recent measures against applicants from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticized the “scam” at the core of many claims, calling for prosecutions of those involved in immigration fraud.

Liberal Democrat Will Forster condemned the situation as “abhorrent,” emphasizing the need for a fair and efficient asylum system. He accused the Conservatives of leaving a “shambles” that allows widespread exploitation. Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf labeled the scandal “outrageous,” blaming the Tories for creating a system prone to abuse.

Aderonke Apata, founder of the African Rainbow Family charity, was granted asylum in the UK due to her lesbian identity and fear of the death penalty in Nigeria. She expressed dismay at the BBC’s findings, stating they undermine the struggles of genuine asylum seekers.

Several LGBT organizations have reported an uptick in individuals attending meetings with suspiciously staged claims. Tom Guy, founder of National Student Pride, noted some attendees arrived, took photos, and left immediately, suggesting premeditated fakery. Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, whose foundation focuses on asylum issues, has also commented on the trend.
