Sunday marks a critical day for Hungary as citizens cast their votes in a contest that could reshape the nation’s political future. The outcome may not only determine the leadership of the country but also ripple across Europe, the United States, and Russia, given the global influence of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s policies. Magyar’s Tisza party aims to overturn reforms that have centralized power within Fidesz, including judicial independence and media control. Analysts note that Hungary’s position on the Corruption Perceptions Index has long been dismal, and recent defections from sectors like law enforcement and business signal growing public discontent. Orbán’s campaign focuses on challenging Brussels and Ukraine, with a rallying cry of “We don’t give our children, we don’t give our weapons and we don’t give our money.” Supporters echo his message, chanting, “we won’t let that happen.” Yet, his economic struggles and recent scandals—such as Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó’s pre- and post-summit talks with Russia—have raised doubts about his continued dominance.
