Four individuals perish in Channel crossing incident

Authorities in northern France confirmed that four people died off the coast during an attempt to cross the English Channel. The Pas-de-Calais prefecture stated that the victims, two men and two women, were swept away by the powerful currents while trying to board a water taxi. The prefect, François-Xavier Lauch, noted that the death toll remains provisional.

“The currents, which can be dangerous here, swept them away,” Lauch said during a press briefing.

Rescue teams were still actively searching for survivors on Thursday morning, with firefighters and intensive care units arriving at the scene at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST). French media reported that the incident occurred between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of Calais.

Recent days have seen calm weather in the English Channel, a contrast to the challenging conditions that persisted for weeks. However, crossings often rise during the summer season. Over the past three years, the number of Channel crossings has risen, with 41,472 individuals reaching the UK via small boats in 2025. Between January 1 and March 26, 2026, only 4,441 people managed to cross from France, marking a 33% decrease compared to the 6,642 recorded in the same period of 2025.

Smugglers shift tactics to evade law enforcement

Smugglers have adopted taxi-boats as a strategy to avoid police. Previously, they would inflate their vessels in coastal dunes near police watchpoints, but now they launch them from more concealed spots, sometimes tens of kilometers from primary departure areas. These boats then travel along the shoreline, akin to taxis or buses, ferrying passengers who wait in the water, beyond police reach.
