Channel 4 Cancels Bake Off Episode with Scott Mills
Channel 4 has decided not to air a celebrity episode of The Great British Bake Off that included DJ Scott Mills. The former Radio 2 breakfast show host was dismissed by the BBC in May following allegations of serious sexual misconduct from over three decades ago. Mills stated he “fully co-operated and responded” to a previous police inquiry, which did not lead to criminal charges, and opted not to make additional remarks. The episode had already been recorded for Stand Up To Cancer, but the broadcaster concluded it would be “inappropriate to broadcast” at this time.
Channel 4 emphasized the gravity of the accusations against Mills, noting they had “carefully considered the circumstances” before making the call. A replacement episode will now be aired in his place. Originally, Mills was set to appear alongside Rag’n’Bone Man, Edith Bowman, and Aston Merrygold in the competition.
Other Events Affected by the Decision
Mills has also been removed from the list of performers for Boyzone’s upcoming Two For The Road reunion concerts at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. He was scheduled as the “special guest DJ” for both events, but his name is no longer featured. It remains unclear whether he left voluntarily or was asked to step down.
The DJ has additionally withdrawn as an ambassador for the MS Society UK, which he joined in 2015 after his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The charity said: “Scott Mills has been a valued MS Society Ambassador for over 10 years. In light of the current news, Scott is stepping back from this role while we review the situation.” They highlighted their commitment to the MS community and their efforts to continue support.
Metropolitan Police Investigation Details
The Metropolitan Police initiated an investigation into Mills in 2016, focusing on allegations involving a teenage boy under 16 between 1997 and 2000. The case was closed in 2019 after prosecutors found there was not enough evidence to pursue charges. The BBC became aware of the investigation in 2017 but took action last month after new information emerged.
“An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully co-operated and responded to in 2018. As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed seven years ago, I hope the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment,” Mills said.
