Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Bhosle was born on 8 September 1933 in Goar, Maharashtra, into the celebrated Mangeshkar family. Raised by her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, a prominent actor and classical vocalist, she began her journey in music at a young age, recording her first film song in 1943 for the Marathi movie *Majha Bal*. This early success set the stage for a career that would evolve across film, ghazals, bhajans, qawwalis, and pop music.
Collaborations with composers like OP Nayyar, SD Burman, and RD Burman solidified her reputation. Hits such as *Aaiye Meherbaan* (1958), *Parde Mein Rehne Do* (1968), and *Dum Maro Dum* (1971) highlighted her range. Her duets with vocal legends like Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Manna Dey are still celebrated as masterpieces.
A Personal Journey
Bhosle’s personal life was as dynamic as her music. At 16, she eloped with her neighbor, Ganpatrao Bhosle, leading to a challenging marriage. Her husband, according to her sister Lata Mangeshkar, isolated her from the family, cutting off contact for years. This period of hardship eventually led to their separation in 1960.
She later married RD Burman in 1980, and their union became a cornerstone of her later years. Burman, who died at 54 in 1994, left an indelible mark on her career, with their collaborative work reshaping the industry’s landscape.
While the rivalry between Bhosle and her sister Lata Mangeshkar persisted in public discourse, their relationship was marked by mutual respect. Mangeshkar suggested that her husband’s influence may have contributed to their silence, but Bhosle herself hinted that her sister’s support could have propelled her career earlier. Despite this, many believe the rivalry was overstated, with both artists carving distinct paths in the world of music.
