Ex-keeper Manninger Dies After Car Collides With Train

Alex Manninger, the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper, passed away at the age of 48 following a tragic collision between his car and a train. His career spanned over a decade, during which he earned 64 appearances for the Gunners between 1997 and 2002, including key roles in their Premier League and FA Cup victories.

International Contributions

Manninger represented Austria in 33 international matches and was a part of the squad that participated in Euro 2008 in his home country. Peter Schottel, the Austrian Football Association’s sporting director, praised his impact:

“Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch. His professionalism, composure, and reliability made him an essential member of his teams and the national squad. His accomplishments will be remembered with great admiration.”

Early Career and European Journeys

Manninger’s professional journey began at his local club, Red Bull Salzburg, before taking him to 14 teams across Europe, such as Siena, Juventus, Udinese, and Augsburg. At 39, he joined Liverpool on a temporary basis in July 2016 but did not get a chance to play.

Arsenal Tenure and Key Moments

While at Arsenal, Manninger often played behind David Seaman, yet stepped in as the starting English goalkeeper was sidelined late in the 1997-98 campaign. That season, he played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s FA Cup triumph over West Ham in the sixth round, and delivered standout performances in a memorable encounter against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
