France Calls on US Ambassador Over Remarks on Far-Right Activist’s Death

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has announced plans to summon the US ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, following statements that he described as an act of “interference.” The dispute centers on the death of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old far-right figure, who succumbed two days after sustaining critical head injuries during a violent confrontation in Lyon on February 12. The Trump administration had previously framed Deranque’s demise as a consequence of left-wing violence, sparking tensions with French authorities.

US Embassy Statement Links Death to Left-Wing Extremism

The US embassy in France recently shared a post from the Counterterrorism Bureau on X, asserting that reports of Deranque being “killed by left-wing militants” warrant widespread concern. The message highlighted the growing influence of radical leftist movements and their potential threat to public safety. Barrot criticized this commentary, emphasizing its impact on national sentiment and accusing the US of meddling in France’s domestic affairs.

“We are summoning the US ambassador to France because the embassy issued a commentary on this event which concerns the national community. We reject any interference in this event,” Barrot stated in an interview with France Inter.

Fatal Brawl Sparks Outcry and Legal Action

A video capturing the brawl, which resulted in Deranque’s death, circulated widely, showing masked individuals physically assaulting him. The footage ignited public outrage, leading to 11 arrests and charges of murder against two suspects. Meanwhile, the incident has also drawn attention from Italy, where Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the rise of ideological hatred linked to left-wing extremism, citing Deranque’s death as evidence of this trend.

Historical Context of French-US Tensions

This is not the first time Kushner has faced diplomatic scrutiny from France. In August 2025, the French Foreign Ministry had summoned him after he criticized the nation’s efforts to combat antisemitism. The current controversy underscores ongoing friction between the two nations, with France perceiving US remarks as undermining its narrative on domestic security issues.
